- Check the car for level spots. Keep your cake level. The best way to travel with your cake is on a flat floor of the car (i.e. the passenger footwell) or on the lap of a trustworthy adult in the passenger seat (having a chopping board or similar under the cake on the person’s lap can help stability and avoid heat transference from legs to cake!). Or you can also place your cake in the boot of the car, using a non-skid mat (e.g. a non-stick shelf liner mat, like those you can buy in a 2-dollar shop, or a yoga mat) to prevent the box from sliding around.
- Keep temperature in mind. Cakes should be kept cool to prevent melting. Avoid using the car heater! And if it’s a hot day outside, the air conditioning may not reach the car’s boot, so it might be safer to keep the cake inside the cabin space to keep it cool – either on the floor or on someone’s lap, as above.
- Drive carefully! Driving with cakes demands extra concentration. Think ahead, so you can better avoid harsh cornering, braking, steep ramps, quick starts, etc.… and watch out for those speed bumps! Driving long distances with cakes is not advisable.
